چکیده

∗ This work was performed in the framework of IST Project AQUILA (Adaptive Re-source Control of QoS Using an IP-based Layered Architecture IST1999-10077) funded in part by the EU. The author wish to express her gratitude to the other members of the AQUILA Consortium for valuable discussions. Abstract: In this article we consider end-to-end interdomain Quality of Service support for non QoS-aware applications. We present a description of QoS requests resp. offers 1at network level: the so called network service profile, and 2at application resp. end-user level: the so called application profile. These profiles support an end-to-end and interdomain interworking scenario for legacy non and QoS aware applications. The network (composed of more than one domain) is QoS enabled and the different domains offer guaranteed network services. With the proposed mechanisms (combination of converters and description syntax at network and application level) it is possible on the one hand to offer user-friendly QoS, and on the other hand to provide a negotiation and description syntax for QoS.

Supporting QoS for Legacy Applications

Internet is widely known for lacking any kind of mechanism for the provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. The Internet community currently concentrates its efforts on mechanisms that support QoS in various layers of the OSI model. Apart from that, the Internet community is trying also to define the protocols, through which applications and users will signal their QoS requirements ...

With both the enterprise and residential sectors embracing voice over IP (VoIP) at an accelerating pace, and the pervasive use of wireless local area networks (WLANs), the natural requirement emerged for a technology to support VoIP over WLANs without degradation of its quality of service (QoS). QoS requirements for WLANs are imposed also by video and multimedia applications tailored for use wi...

Q-Pod: Deployable and Scalable End System Support for Enabling QoS in Legacy Enterprise Systems

Despite a growing need for a QoS-aware Internet, inter-domain policy barriers, legacy compatible deployment, and scalable integration stand in the way of realizing a workable solution. In this paper, we focus on the QoS requirements of enterprise systems and advance an incrementally deployable "turnkey" solution that achieves scalable QoS-to-the-desktop under variable network conditions. Our co...

Foundations of a Generic Framework for Distributed Applications

With the increasing presence of the Internet in today’s applications, ranging from legacy enterprise systems to handheld devices and home appliances, there is an increasing need for a generic middleware that can enable the interoperability between traditional legacy systems and more recent mobile and embedded applications. In addition, this middleware should support an increasingly diverse set ...
